Childcare Resource & Referral

  • Referral services for parents seeking childcare in the five counties of Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata Montezuma and San Juan Counties. Free of charge Toll free: 1-877-338-CARE

Training & Technical Assistance

    • Information on how to open a licensed family child care home business
    • Medication Administration a state approved, 4 hour required training on how to administer medication to children in a childcare setting. Taught by a Registered Nurse.
    • Universal Precautions a required 1 ½ hour training on standard precautions and blood borne diseases.  Taught by an R.N.
    • CPR/1st Aid a state required class for all childcare workers, renewable every 2 years. Taught by an R.N.
    • Pre-Licensing a state required 15 clock hours of pre-licensing training to become a licensed family childcare provider in the State of Colorado. Taught by a Department approved trainer. 

Consumer Education materials

The Working Your Way through the Child Care Maze publication in partnership with Bright Beginnings Colorado is a tool for parents to use when searching for quality child care. It includes information about types of child care, licensing information, why quality child care is important, questions to ask child care providers, and much more. It is emailed or mailed with every childcare referral. You can download the entire publication. At:

Current Projects

  • Qualistar Quality Ratings: Developed by 150 early childhood experts, the Qualistar Rating measures quality in licensed early learning programs, both home and center based that serve children birth to kindergarten.
  • Child Care Providers volunteer to have trained quality rating specialists spend several hours in their programs collecting information and evaluating their program. In other cases, Child Care Providers are required to have annual quality evaluations because of funding sources. For more information on child care resources available, please visit www.qualistar.org
